The recruitment drive by Saudi Railway Polytechnic (SRP) and Renfe for female train drivers on the Haramain High Speed Railway project has seen a significant surge in interest. With 38,000 candidates applying, a testament to the success of the initiative, 35 Saudi women will undergo training to become high-speed train drivers. This marks the second such drive, following the groundbreaking first recruitment in 2022, which resulted in 34 women becoming the country's and the Middle East's first female train drivers.
Renfe's commitment to gender diversity in Saudi Arabia is evident not only in this initiative but also in its overall workforce composition, where over a third are women. This proactive stance positions Renfe as a trailblazer in the region. The rigorous training process for potential applicants includes theoretical and practical components spanning one year, facilitated by SRP in collaboration with Renfe. Upon completion, the newly licensed female train drivers will join Renfe KSA's workforce, further diversifying the operational landscape of the Haramain Speed Railway.
The training program underscores Renfe's longstanding involvement in Saudi Arabia's railway development. Since 2013, Renfe has been pivotal in training drivers for the kingdom's high-speed trains. Recently, an agreement with SRP expanded theoretical training opportunities locally. Renfe's contributions extend beyond driver training, with over 800 Saudis trained for various roles in commercial services, sales, and operations, aligning with the kingdom's Vision 2030 goals.
