A consortium of industry leaders in mechanical and civil engineering and robotic automation has developed the first robotic and AI solution poised to revolutionize the installation of mechanical and civil services in tunnels. The team includes Tunnel Engineering Services (UK) Ltd (TES), i3D robotics (i3D), the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC), Costain, and VVB Engineering.
Traditionally, installing services in tunnels is fraught with danger, labor intensity, and significant time consumption. The ATRIS prototype offers an autonomous system that can select, position, and mount supports along tunnel walls. This automation mitigates risks associated with manual labor at the tunnel face, such as working at height in confined spaces and exposure to hand-arm vibrations during installation, thereby enhancing on-site health and safety.
