On June 3, 2024, Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, successfully delivered the first Metropolis metro train for Pune Metro Line 3 from its manufacturing facility in Sricity, Andhra Pradesh. These trains, manufactured entirely in India, are designed to operate at speeds of up to 85 km/h, linking Hinjewadi’s IT hub with Shivajinagar’s central business district in Pune, Maharashtra's second-largest city.
During the handover ceremony, Olivier Loison, Managing Director of Alstom India, expressed excitement about contributing to the prestigious Tata Group project. He emphasized the significance of the locally manufactured, technologically advanced Metropolis metro trains in improving the quality of life for citizens and fostering the city's development. Loison highlighted Alstom's commitment to creating sustainable products and solutions designed for long-term efficiency and durability.
The Pune Metro Line 3, an approximately 23 km elevated rail project, connects Hinjewadi's IT hub to Shivajinagar's central business district. This initiative, a joint effort by Tata Group and the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), follows a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Tata Group established Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited as a special purpose vehicle (SPV) to oversee the construction of the corridor, which includes 23 stations.
In 2021, a consortium comprising Alstom India, TRIL Urban Transport Private Limited (a Tata Group company), and Siemens Project Ventures GmbH (a subsidiary of Siemens Financial Services) secured a PPP contract from PMRDA. This contract encompasses the provision of rolling stock, as well as electrical and mechanical systems for the elevated metro line, developed on a Design, Build, Finance, Operate & Transfer (DBFOT) basis. As part of this agreement, Alstom is manufacturing 22 Metropolis trainsets, each consisting of three cars, with a capacity to carry 1,000 passengers per train.
