French rail manufacturer Alstom has signed a landmark contract to supply 55 Traxx Hauler electric locomotives to Ukrainian Railways, in a deal valued at approximately €470 million. The agreement represents a significant boost for Ukraine’s rail infrastructure, which has faced growing demand for both passenger and freight services, particularly in the context of increasing trade with European Union countries. Alstom’s Traxx locomotives are renowned for their reliability, high performance, and adaptability, making them well-suited to Ukraine’s diverse rail network. This project is not only a major step in modernizing Ukraine’s rolling stock but also a strategic investment in the country’s economic resilience, transport efficiency, and integration with European railway standards.
The contract encompasses advanced, dual-voltage locomotives compatible with 3 kV DC and 25 kV AC electrification systems, ensuring seamless operation across Ukraine’s existing network and facilitating future cross-border services. Beyond the supply of locomotives, the agreement includes comprehensive driver and maintenance staff training, as well as the provision of spare parts and technical support to ensure long-term operational reliability. Delivery is scheduled to begin in 2027, marking the start of a multi-year implementation phase. This project will significantly enhance Ukraine’s freight-handling capacity, allowing heavier and faster trains, reducing transit times, and improving overall network efficiency. It also represents a crucial step toward harmonizing Ukraine’s rail infrastructure with EU interoperability standards, facilitating smoother cross-border transport and international logistics.
Financing for the €470 million project is being supported by major international financial institutions, including €300 million from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and $190 million from the World Bank. This collaboration underscores the international community’s commitment to strengthening Ukraine’s transport infrastructure, boosting trade, and fostering sustainable economic growth. By modernizing Ukraine’s locomotive fleet, the project is expected to improve energy efficiency, reduce operational costs, and lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to older diesel units. Moreover, these locomotives will enhance passenger services, providing safer, faster, and more reliable connections for both domestic and international travelers. Overall, the Alstom deal marks a transformative moment for Ukraine’s railway system, combining cutting-edge technology, international financing, and strategic planning to support long-term mobility and economic integration in Eastern Europe.
