On June 19, 2024, Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, signed a contract with Mercitalia Rail, a company under Polo Logistica FS, to supply 70 Traxx Universal locomotives for Italy, along with 12 years of full maintenance services. The contract, valued at over €323 million, includes the option to supply an additional 30 locomotives and extend the maintenance services. Some of these locomotives will feature last mile technology, enhancing their operational flexibility.

The Traxx Universal locomotives represent the most advanced four-axle platform available, offering high energy efficiency and superior traction capacity. Their functional design and extended maintenance plan, which includes reduced intervention frequencies, ensure high levels of reliability and availability. The inclusion of the last mile system allows for seamless transitions from electrified lines to non-electrified tracks, such as those in ports, industrial areas, or terminals, significantly enhancing logistical efficiency.

This agreement not only strengthens operations at Alstom’s Vado Ligure site in Italy but also reaffirms Alstom's expertise in cutting-edge railway technologies. The Vado Ligure facility, with over a century of vehicle production experience and a workforce of more than 300 people, has been pivotal in various production stages. These include electrical and pneumatic sub-assembly, bogie assembly, vehicle painting, final assembly, testing, rain tests, vehicle weighing, and repair of power and control electronics.

The contract's inclusion of last mile locomotives capable of directly connecting the railway network with terminals and ports is set to enhance global cargo handling efficiency, speed, and security. Alstom’s commitment to excellence and innovation enables them to provide tailored solutions that meet their customers' needs, further solidifying their position as a leader in the rail industry.
