Bavaria is preparing for one of its most substantial rail-infrastructure investment years as Deutsche Bahn’s infrastructure arm, InfraGO, announces plans to allocate more than €4 billion to the region’s network in 2026. This major programme reflects the increasing urgency to modernise Germany’s high-demand railway corridors, many of which are operating at or beyond their intended capacity. The project will focus heavily on essential renewal work, including the refurbishment of approximately 500 km of track and the replacement of more than 200 switches—core components that determine network performance, reliability and safety. These upgrades are particularly important for Bavaria, which serves as both a key domestic transport hub and an international transit gateway for north–south and east–west European rail flows.
Beyond track and switch renewal, the investment plan includes targeted corridor expansions and a series of station improvements across the region. Such enhancements are designed to relieve bottlenecks, improve punctuality and expand capacity for both passenger and freight traffic. Stations, many of which require accessibility upgrades, digital signage improvements or platform modernisation, will also benefit from this package. Bavaria’s mix of dense urban networks—especially around Munich—and extensive regional lines makes it a complex environment for infrastructure planning. The 2026 programme is therefore structured to balance metropolitan requirements with the operational needs of rural and intercity routes, ensuring that mobility improvements are felt across the entire state rather than confined to a few high-traffic corridors.
The forthcoming works build on the momentum of earlier major upgrades in the Werdenfels region and the Upper Palatinate, where recent investment has already begun to improve service stability and reduce maintenance-related disruptions. By continuing this multi-year modernisation drive, InfraGO aims to create a more resilient network able to support rising ridership, growing freight volumes and Germany’s broader climate-transport goals. Modern rail infrastructure is crucial not only for providing high-quality public transport but also for encouraging modal shift away from road traffic and strengthening the competitiveness of long-distance rail services. With the 2026 investment round, Bavaria stands to benefit from a more robust, reliable and future-ready railway system—one that supports economic growth while advancing Germany’s long-term sustainability and mobility strategies.
