CAF and Metro Madrid have finalized a contract worth nearly €400 million for the supply of the first of two new train sets, aimed at renewing and expanding Madrid's rolling stock fleet. The agreement includes the design and supply of 40 wide-gauge, single-voltage trains for lines 6 and 8 of the metropolitan network. Additionally, it encompasses the development and implementation of a program to optimize the fleet's life cycle, with a future option to increase the number of trains supplied.

The financing for this purchase comes from loans provided by the European Investment Bank (EIB). Madrid's metro network aims to enhance service quality and increase capacity to meet rising passenger demand and projected growth. This initiative is in line with the Community of Madrid's environmental policies, emphasizing the need for more energy-efficient trains to support sustainable urban transport.

Each train unit supplied by CAF will consist of six cars, including four motor cars and two trailer cars, designed to maximize passenger capacity with a non-obstructed layout and gangway aisles running the full length of the unit. The tender's technical requirements were stringent, focusing on energy consumption, total life cycle cost (LCC), and the technical performance of the units. Notably, the trains will be capable of semi-automatic (GoA2) and fully automatic (GoA4) operation.

CAF has a long-standing relationship with Metro Madrid, having supplied the majority of the capital city's suburban fleet. To date, CAF has designed and manufactured over 600 metro units for Madrid, including the 2000, 3000, 5000, 6000, 8000, and 8400 series. The most recent deliveries, the 8400 series units, were provided in 2010 and 2011 and are currently in service on line 6.
