Chiltern Railways has achieved significant recognition at the 2024 Railway Innovation Awards, winning two prestigious awards. The company received the Environment and Sustainability award for being the first passenger train operator in the UK to use recycled vegetable oil as fuel. This innovative switch powers the locomotives that haul the iconic 'silver sets,' which transport passengers on the Chiltern main line from London Marylebone to Stourbridge.
Additionally, Chiltern Railways won the People, Skills, and Diversity award, sharing the honor with CrossCountry and CGA Experience for the CGA Empathy Lab. The Empathy Lab tests the effectiveness of empathy training using immersive content to equip staff with skills for managing conflict and emotional situations, ultimately enhancing the customer experience. This initiative was recognized for its significant impact on both employee development and customer service.
Richard Allan, Managing Director of Chiltern Railways, expressed pride in these achievements, highlighting the innovative nature of the projects. "The use of recycled vegetable oil and the Empathy Lab concept are two groundbreaking projects that are early evidence of delivering on our vision to make Chiltern easier, greener, and better for colleagues and customers," Allan stated. He emphasized the company's commitment to improving the railway for both customers and employees.
