The new M4 metro line to Sydhavn and Valby, featuring Hitachi Rail's cutting-edge digital signalling technology, was inaugurated on June 22nd by King Frederik of Denmark. The event also included the Danish Minister of Transport, ambassadors from France, Austria, Italy, Portugal, and Japan, as well as the Lord Mayor of Copenhagen and the mayor of Frederiksberg. This 4.5 km extension of the M4 South line includes five metro stations and serves as a significant hub for connections with the S-train network and regional and national trains, enhancing connectivity between Copenhagen South, the city center, and northern areas.
Hitachi Rail was responsible for the design and supply of the comprehensive Transportation System for both the M4 South and North extensions. This included signalling technologies, train supervision, and new train fleets. The system incorporates driverless and communication-based train control (CBTC) technology, which reduces the need for extensive physical infrastructure while increasing service capacity. This allows trains to run safely at shorter intervals. With this extension, about 75% of Copenhagen and Frederiksberg residents will be within 600 meters of a metro or train station, greatly improving public transport access.
This project represents the fourth successful metro project by Hitachi Rail in Copenhagen, following the M1 and M2 lines launched in 2002 and the M3 Cityringen opened in September 2019. Hitachi Rail has played a crucial role in supporting Metroselskabet and the municipality's goal of providing a continuously connected Copenhagen, operating 24/7 with advanced signalling technologies that promote greener and more sustainable urban mobility. Gianluca Guido, Head of Hitachi Rail Denmark, expressed gratitude for the robust collaboration with Metroselskabet and transport authorities, highlighting the project's importance in Copenhagen's aim to become the world's first carbon-neutral capital.
Hitachi Rail has had a presence in Denmark for over 30 years, thanks to a longstanding partnership with the Copenhagen Metro. On May 31, 2024, Hitachi Rail expanded its presence in Denmark by acquiring Thales' Ground Transportation Systems business for €1.7 billion. This acquisition strengthens its collaboration with BaneDanmark, especially in implementing ERTMS digital signalling technology on Denmark’s mainline network, further demonstrating Hitachi Rail's commitment to advancing the country’s transportation infrastructure.
