Collisions between trains and elephants in India pose a significant threat to both endangered wildlife and human safety. To address this critical issue, Sensonic has developed an innovative elephant detection system, also known as the Gajraj system. Utilizing Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) technology, this system listens for the footsteps of elephants approaching railway tracks. By detecting vibrations through fiber optic cables buried alongside the tracks, the AI-enabled system can monitor the presence and movement of elephants in real-time. When elephants come too close to the railway line, the system sends warnings to railway staff, allowing them to take necessary precautions such as reducing train speed or stopping the train to prevent deadly collisions.

The benefits of Sensonic’s elephant detection system are multifaceted, extending to elephants, railway operations, and local communities. "We are incredibly proud to partner with Indian Railways' East Coast network on this vital project," said Deep Desai, Managing Director of Sensonic India. By preventing collisions, the system helps protect endangered elephants and ensures the safety of train passengers and staff. Additionally, it minimizes disruptions to railway operations, enhancing the efficiency and reliability of train services. This comprehensive solution supports wildlife conservation while simultaneously improving the quality of life for passengers and local residents.

The project scope includes the deployment of Sensonic’s elephant detection system across approximately 1,200 kilometers of fiber optic cables surrounding 400 kilometers of railway tracks within the East Coast network, which spans the states of Orissa and Jharkhand. The implementation involves the installation of 20 strategically positioned sensing units along with supporting equipment that enable real-time monitoring, data analysis, and alert notifications to railway staff, including station masters and locomotive pilots. This initiative follows a competitive tender process that involved on-site technology demonstrations, evaluations, and acceptance tests conducted by Indian Railways.

Through this project, Sensonic aims to create a safer environment for both elephants and humans while ensuring smooth railway operations. The collaboration with Indian Railways exemplifies a proactive approach to wildlife conservation and transportation safety. By leveraging advanced technology, the Gajraj system represents a significant step forward in mitigating the risks associated with train-elephant collisions, ultimately contributing to the preservation of endangered species and the well-being of communities in the region.
