The railway industry encompasses much more than just trains and tracks—data plays a pivotal role in unlocking its potential. This critical aspect of data is a prominent topic in European discussions, with numerous organizations contributing to exciting developments.
At the European Union Agency for Railways (ERA), we have set an objective to transform into a data-centric organization. One of our current initiatives involves updating our registers to decouple data from applications, utilizing a semantic approach to achieve this goal.
In 2023, a new regulation for the Register of Railway Infrastructure (RINF) came into force. This regulation establishes a register based on the Agency’s published ontology. The RINF is now the definitive reference for railway infrastructure data, including the essential data required by Railway Undertakings to create a driver’s routebook. As the Agency continues to expand this ontology to encompass the entire railway system, the need for data exchange and collaboration with stakeholders becomes increasingly critical.
To foster this collaboration, we are organizing the Rail Data Forum in Verona, Italy, on 18-19 June 2024. This forum aims to initiate a broader and deeper collaboration on railway data, marking the beginning of an era of enhanced cooperation among all stakeholders in the railway industry.
