Government moves forward high-speed rail to Vigo and Madrid

The Council of Ministers has made a strategic decision to expedite the completion of the high-speed rail connection between Lisbon and Madrid, aiming to achieve competitive travel times and offer a viable alternative to daily flights. By setting ambitious targets, such as reducing travel time between Porto-Lisbon to 1 hour and 15 minutes, Lisbon-Madrid to 3 hours, and Porto-Vigo to 50 minutes, the government seeks to revolutionize intercity transportation in Portugal and Spain.

This initiative not only addresses the growing demand for efficient and sustainable modes of travel but also aims to significantly reduce reliance on air travel. With approximately 40 flights between Lisbon and Madrid and 20 between Porto and Lisbon, high-speed trains are poised to offer a compelling alternative, catering to both domestic and international travelers.
