Hitachi Rail has successfully completed the installation of a new Signalling System on the Kouvola-Kotka/Hamina train line in Finland, marking a significant milestone in the trial implementation of ETCS Level 2 technology. This project highlights Hitachi Rail's capability to deliver complex solutions on schedule and within scope, showcasing their collaborative efforts with various stakeholders. The integration of 5G technology with the ETCS Level 2 system sets a new benchmark for railway safety and efficiency, not only in Finland but also on a broader scale.

Initially awarded the contract in 2021 by the Finnish Transportation Infrastructure Agency (FTIA), Hitachi Rail (formerly Thales Ground Transportation Systems) embarked on this ambitious project with the mission to establish the first ETCS L2 trial track in Finland. The project involved deploying advanced trackside and onboard equipment, including radio communication systems aligned with Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) specifications. The interlocking renewal, which was part of this project, has been in commercial operation since November 2023, further cementing the project's success.

Throughout the project, Hitachi Rail demonstrated its expertise by forming technical working groups to outline the requirements and specifications for ETCS Level 2 implementation. They provided substantial support to FTIA, particularly in the development of customized training programs. Hitachi Rail adeptly managed variation orders to adapt to changing needs, maintaining a steadfast commitment to the Digirail digitalization program within an Integrated Program Team (IPT).

This project serves as a significant benchmark in railway signalling within Finland, setting the stage for future ETCS Level 2 technology deployments in the country. It also significantly boosts local expertise in ETCS technology. Niko Hoffmann, General Program Manager for Hitachi Rail Finland, praised the dedication and collaboration of the team, noting that their skill and timely application ensured the project's exceptional performance.
