Jindal Stainless, India’s largest stainless steel manufacturer, recently supplied stainless steel for the construction of 100 'Made in India' freight wagons exported to Mozambique. These wagons, made from a special grade IRSM 44 stainless steel developed by Jindal Stainless for Indian Railways freight stock, were shipped from Gujarat’s Deendayal Port to Mozambique’s Port of Nacala. This export initiative was supported by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Government of India, which hailed it as a significant advancement in India's export capabilities and manufacturing and logistics expertise.
The custom-made tippler-style wagons, designed by Jindal Rail Infrastructure Limited (JRIL), a prominent freight car manufacturer in India, each have a payload of 63 metric tonnes. JRIL, known for its high-quality railway wagons supplied to Indian Railways, the private sector, and international markets, has developed these wagons to be lighter in weight than existing models. Approximately 4.3 tonnes of specially developed stainless steel was used for the floor, side, and end walls of each wagon, ensuring enhanced durability and longevity due to the superior corrosion resistance and inert properties of stainless steel. This choice leads to lower life cycle costs and reduced carbon emissions.
The wagons will be used to transport coal, iron ore, and other materials. Of the 100 wagons, 24 have already reached Mozambique, 26 are currently at the port, and the remaining 50 are en route to the port. Commenting on this milestone, Mr. Abhyuday Jindal, Managing Director of Jindal Stainless, expressed pride in contributing to the 'Made in India' initiative, which highlights the country's export capabilities and aspirations to become a global manufacturing hub. He emphasized that these wagons not only enhance transportation efficiency but also showcase India’s potential in advanced manufacturing, positioning the country as a key player in the global supply chain.
Jindal Stainless has a history of supplying stainless steel to government railway projects, contributing to several pioneering achievements. These include India's first Vande Metro train, the country’s first underwater metro line in Kolkata, and the first train set of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS).
