STRABAG Rail has embarked on two major modernisation projects in the Czech Republic, marking a significant step in strengthening the nation’s railway infrastructure. Valued at approximately €360 million and commissioned by Správa železnic, the Czech Railway Administration, these projects are part of a broader effort to modernise key transport corridors and enhance connectivity within Central Europe. The initiatives focus on the Brno–Přerov high-speed section and the Česká Třebová junction, both critical components of the country’s rail network. The Brno–Přerov line serves as a major corridor for freight and passenger services, while Česká Třebová is one of the busiest junctions, handling converging traffic from multiple lines. Together, these projects aim to improve operational capacity, speed, and safety, while integrating the Czech network more fully into the trans-European TEN-T network. The comprehensive work reflects both national and European priorities for sustainable, high-capacity rail transport, demonstrating a commitment to modernising essential infrastructure to support economic growth and regional mobility.

The Brno–Přerov high-speed section represents a pivotal part of these upgrades. STRABAG, leading a consortium, is doubling the track along nearly ten kilometers between Nezamyslice and Kojetín, which will allow faster, more reliable train operations and reduce congestion along this heavily trafficked corridor. A major highlight of the project is the construction of a 744-meter twin-track tunnel near Němčice, designed to facilitate smoother flow and higher speeds for both passenger and freight services. Modernisation efforts extend to the stations along the route, including Měrovice nad Hanou and Němčice nad Hanou, which will feature barrier-free access, lifts, and improved facilities for bicycles and vehicles. Environmental considerations are integrated into the project with the installation of approximately 2,300 meters of noise barriers to minimise the impact on local communities. Advanced signalling and safety systems, including ETCS (European Train Control System) and GSM-R (Global System for Mobile Communications – Railway), will be implemented, ensuring the upgraded section meets modern European standards for speed, safety, and interoperability.

The Česká Třebová junction modernisation represents an even more ambitious undertaking. This project involves the reconstruction of 72 kilometers of track, refurbishment of overhead power lines, and rebuilding of 30 bridge structures, making it the largest project ever commissioned for a single junction by Správa železnic. The upgrade includes modernising all passenger platforms, installing new canopies, and building a modern steel pedestrian bridge to replace an outdated underpass, enhancing safety and accessibility. Preparatory works, such as temporary signalling installation, initial track laying, and construction of the “Potok junction” branch line, are already underway. These upgrades are expected to substantially increase the junction’s capacity, improve reliability, and reduce bottlenecks, benefiting both freight and passenger traffic. Once complete, the projects will enable higher operational speeds, more efficient scheduling, and improved connectivity for international and domestic rail services, supporting the Czech Republic’s strategic position within European transport networks. By combining advanced engineering, state-of-the-art signalling, sustainable design, and workforce development, STRABAG’s work ensures that the Czech rail system will meet the growing demands of the 21st century while fostering regional economic growth.
