Climate change presents one of the greatest challenges of this century, particularly for companies in regions prone to natural hazards. The increasing frequency and intensity of natural disasters, such as storms, heat waves, and strong winds, threaten to destroy a significant share of capital and disrupt operations. Railways are particularly vulnerable, as adverse weather conditions can damage infrastructure, affect rolling stock, and increase braking distances due to factors like leaves on the tracks. Other hazards, such as earthquakes, also pose significant risks to railway safety.
These challenges necessitate a robust Safety Management System (SMS) for railway operators, taking into account the effects of high temperatures on workers and passengers, as well as the decreasing reliability of systems leading to more frequent operational disruptions. The International Union of Railways (UIC) is dedicated to enhancing the sector's resilience to climate change through various projects. An upcoming webinar on safety will address strategies for maintaining safety performance amidst the growing threats posed by climate change and natural hazards.
