Uzbekistan has achieved a major milestone in its ongoing railway modernization program with the completion of full electrification on the 465-kilometer Babura–Urgench–Khiva route. This strategic upgrade forms part of a broader plan to strengthen national and regional mobility while stimulating tourism in the historic Khiva region. The project paves the way for the introduction of six high-speed electric trains manufactured by Hyundai Rotem, scheduled to begin service next year. Once operational, these new trains will cut travel time between Tashkent and Khiva from approximately 14 hours to about 7 hours 40 minutes, dramatically improving accessibility for both domestic passengers and international visitors.

Beyond electrification, the upgrade incorporates a wide range of infrastructure enhancements aimed at improving safety, efficiency, and reliability. The route now features modern protective fencing, rehabilitated bridges, and reinforced engineering structures designed to ensure uninterrupted operations under varying climatic conditions. These improvements reflect Uzbekistan’s focus on long-term sustainability and safety within its transport system. The project also includes upgraded traction substations, signaling systems, and overhead power lines, aligning the network with international standards for electric railway operation. The improved line is expected to handle higher-capacity trains and deliver more energy-efficient services, reducing dependence on diesel locomotives and cutting operational costs.

This electrification project represents more than a transport upgrade—it embodies Uzbekistan’s vision to integrate rail development with tourism and regional growth. The ancient city of Khiva, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracts thousands of visitors annually, and faster, more comfortable train connections are expected to significantly increase tourist inflows from both within and outside the country. Moreover, the Babura–Urgench–Khiva corridor is strategically linked to trade and logistics routes connecting Central Asia with the broader Eurasian region. The government’s rail modernization efforts complement its policies to boost local economies, improve travel comfort, and transition toward greener mobility solutions. By investing in electrification and modern rolling stock, Uzbekistan is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable railway infrastructure in Central Asia, ensuring that rail transport continues to play a vital role in national integration, regional cooperation, and economic diversification.
