German rail infrastructure specialist Vossloh AG has secured a landmark €100 million contract with Italy’s national railway infrastructure manager, Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), to supply advanced components for the country’s expanding high-speed rail corridors. The six-year agreement covers the production and delivery of rail fastening systems, switches, and crossings designed for the next generation of Italian high-speed lines. This contract aligns with Italy’s national transport modernization program, which aims to create faster, greener, and more interconnected railway links between major cities and regional centers. Deliveries will begin in 2026 and continue through 2032, supporting strategic projects such as the Turin–Lyon, Naples–Bari, and Palermo–Catania high-speed corridors. The deal further strengthens Vossloh’s European presence, particularly within countries investing heavily in sustainable transport infrastructure to meet EU decarbonization targets.
The agreement reflects both the technical excellence and long-term reliability of Vossloh’s engineering solutions, which are specifically designed to meet the demanding conditions of high-speed rail networks operating at speeds above 300 km/h. Italy’s high-speed network already spans approximately 1,450 km, with additional 700 km under development, making it one of the most extensive systems in Europe. The Italian government and RFI have allocated over €25 billion through 2032 for upgrades and new construction, much of which is co-financed by the European Union’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). Vossloh’s contribution will include implementing new predictive maintenance technologies, digital monitoring systems, and sustainable material solutions to extend asset life and reduce operational costs. These innovations are expected to optimize performance, increase safety, and minimize the carbon footprint of rail operations — a key objective of both Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) and the broader European Green Deal.
From a strategic perspective, this contract underscores the rising importance of European industrial collaboration in building a connected, sustainable mobility network. It also demonstrates how suppliers like Vossloh are capitalizing on the surge in infrastructure spending and the revival of rail transport as a preferred mode for long-distance travel and freight. Italy’s high-speed sector saw a 15% increase in ridership in 2024, reaching more than 45 million passengers, illustrating robust demand and the need for continuous investment in core infrastructure. For Vossloh, the deal represents a strengthening of its long-standing relationship with RFI and a consolidation of its position as a trusted supplier of high-performance track systems in Europe’s most ambitious rail projects. The partnership is also expected to support local job creation and foster knowledge exchange with Italian engineering partners, contributing to both economic growth and technological advancement within the rail supply chain.
